Versions and releases
Your version is free text and never ordered. packaging.revision rises with each repack; the catalogue numbers releases. Never reuse a version and revision with different bytes.
Versions
version is the author's text, 1 to 32 characters. It is never ordered and two versions are not compared as numbers: "10.2.0", "Alpha 5" and "IVb" are all fine.
packaging.revision marks a repack of the same version, rising from 1, so a file install still sees a newer build of that version when no catalogue is involved.
Releases
A registry's catalogue numbers every release of a package key and never orders version strings. An update is a higher release of the same key from the same registry.
| What | Who sets it | Rule |
|---|---|---|
version | The author | Free text. Never reused with different bytes. |
packaging.revision | The packager | Rises with every package of the same version. |
release | The registry | Rises with every publish of the key. Immutable: a saved game or replay keeps the release it was made with. |
Updates
The Library shows an update when the catalogue has a higher release than the one installed, and a file install replaces a lower packaging.revision of the same version after asking. One version back is kept in .backup, so a replace can be undone.
A publisher never reuses a version and revision with different bytes: the content library's publish script refuses it.
